I've noticed a disproportionate amount of religion bashing going on amongst some of the people I know and respect online. Phrases like - 'religion is the root of all conflict' and 'religion has caused more death and destruction than anything else' have been the norm when the subject is broached. Now I'm as irreligious as the next athiest but these blanket statements are simply not true. Here's some stats on the top 5 atrocities of all time: 1: World War Two (1937 to 1945) - 50,000,000 dead 2: Mao Zedong's Regime (1949 to 1976) - 40,000,000 dead 3: Stalin's Regime (1924 to 1953) - 20,000,000 dead 4: World War One (1914 to 1918) - 15,000,000 dead 5: Russian Civil War (1918 to 1921) - 8,800,000 dead None of these conflicts directly involved religion at all. In my opinion they were all based on mankinds greed. Greed for land. For power. For geo-political control. It's like we don't need gods to justify our own ends anymore - we'll kill who we want for whatever reasons we like. For revenge. For oil. For corporate profit. Don't blame death and destruction on religion - we're more than capable of doing it all and worse on our own. |

| violetbleiz September 15, 2004 07:12 PM PDT vicious cycle. people create religion, religion creates people, and sometimes those people just kill alot of people... hrm yes.. perhaps that makes sense | ||
| Halcyon September 11, 2004 02:29 AM PDT lets just face it, pretty much everything humans do causes some suffering in some measure. even the good stuff can inadvertantly cause some people to suffer. without finding some way to neutralise everything people do thats wrong, we're just gonna have to hunker down and accept it. i meant of course that as well as fighting for the glory of the third reich, hitler was very much fighting for what he saw as the glory of god. | ||
| Adenol September 9, 2004 10:55 PM PDT Humans of greed, pours out from within them acts that cause suffering. Religion's name is tainted by many acts of humans. In the name of religion they say. Sigh... | ||
| Solender September 9, 2004 03:25 PM PDT Which killings in WWII involved religion? Don't confuse the holocaust with a religious cleansing Halc - Hitler hated the Jews as a race, regardless of religious convictions. As for religion causing suffering... IMHO our greed based society causes a lot more. If such things could be measured of course... | ||
| Halcyon September 9, 2004 02:46 PM PDT a lot of the killing involved in the second world war was involved with religion, but lets face it, just about everything causes war, but in religion is a high cause of suffering, i'm not saying it's disproportionate to other sources, just that it does. | ||
